American Fork makes short work of Pleasant Grove in 48-21 win

A strong effort from American Fork gave the Cavemen their third win of the season with a 48-21 win over the Vikings from Pleasant Grove.

American Fork controlled the game right out of the gate. The Cavemen’s defense shut down Pleasant Grove’s offense to force it into a three and out situation on the Vikings’ first possession.

With six plays through the air and one on the ground, American Fork had no problem moving the ball. At the 7:16 mark on the clock, the second grounder put senior quarterback Boone Abbott into the Vikings’ end zone. Senior kicker Kyle Thompson added the PAT, and the Cavemen were on their way to their third region win.

American Fork scored four touchdowns in the first quarter, three through the air and one on the ground. For the game, American Fork had five passing touchdowns, two field goals and a touchdown on the ground. Thompson contributed 12 points on his own with six PATs and two field goals.

The Vikings had 23 carries for 114 yards and completed 14 passes out of 21 attempts for 222 yards passing, for a total of 336 yards of offense.

American Fork had 28 carries for 115 rushing yards and completed 35 passes out of 52 attempts for a total of 454 passing yards, totaling 569 total yards of offense. The Cavemen earned 28 first downs compared to Pleasant Grove’s six first downs.

American Fork’s head football coach, Aaron Behm said, “We take our season week by week. We have a renewed focus from last year, we follow our prep schedule, and the kids get used to it. They have bought into the way we work, and the results support their efforts.” He added, “Bingham is our next game. We knew they would be the last region team we’d play, and we’ve been getting ready for them. It’s time to start thinking about them right now.”

Pleasant Grove now has a 1-2 win/loss record in region play with a 5-3 overall record and will face another region foe next week, playing at Lone Peak.

American Fork has a region-leading 3-0 win/loss record with a 7-1 overall record and will play the Bingham Miners next week.

High school football: American Fork rolls past rival Pleasant Grove

With quarterback Boone Abbott slinging it around with ease, American Fork crushed rival Pleasant Grove 48-21 to remain perfect in Region 4 and set up a showdown next week at former No. 1 Bingham next week.

Abbott finished the game passing for 416 yards and five TDS, with most of that damage coming in the first half where he threw for 275 yards and four TDs to help the Cavemen build a 38-7 lead.

American Fork’s offense scored all six times it touched the ball in the first half.

“We did a good job protecting Boone, and Boone did a good job getting the ball to all sorts of different guys and reading the defense in the first half,” said American Fork coach Aaron Behm.

Three of Abbott’s touchdown passes went to Chase Roberts who finished the game with 11 receptions for 200 yards.

The victory gives American Fork a chance to win the outright Region 4 championship when it takes on Bingham next week.

“It’s something we’ve wanted. We knew our schedule was put out there so that Bingham would be the last region game, you just hope you put in the work to make that a significant game going into Week 9, and here we are,” said Behm.

American Fork’s defense opened the game Friday with a big stop, and then the offense marched straight downfield and to a 7-0 lead as Abbott scored on a 1-yard plunge with 7:16 left in the first quarter.

Pleasant Grove responded with a six-play, 80-yard and tied the game at 7-7 as Jake Jensen hit Jackson Hill on a 42-yard TD pass.

The next three plays changed the entire complexion of the game, and the Cavemen never looked back. On the first play, after Pleasant Grove tied the game, Abbott hit Roberts on a seam route that he took 77 yards for the touchdown for the 14-7 lead.

Two plays into Pleasant Grove’s ensuing drive Jensen injured his shoulder on a tackle near the sideline and never returned. Against American Fork’s stout defense the Vikings just couldn’t keep up with a backup quarterback.

Even with Jensen it might not have mattered as well as American Fork played.

Before the first quarter was done, Abbott hit Roberts on a 33-yard TD strike and then Devin Downing on a seven-yard score to push the lead to 28-7.

American Fork bludgeons visiting Pleasant Grove

The Pleasant Grove versus American Fork football game featured a packed house and plenty of enthusiasm from both sets of fans. The Cavemen came out decked in red while Pleasant Grove wore their blue jerseys.

In this gridiron battle between two Region 4 and 6A goliaths, American Fork threw the first punch. Pleasant Grove counterpunched but was then the Cavemen simply bludgeoned the visiting team winning by a tally of 45-21.

The Cavemen struck first as Boone Abbott scored on a 1-yard run. Pleasant Grove responded as Jake Jensen connected with Jackson Hill on a 42-yard touchdown pass. Then the Cavemen reeled off 31 straight points, including scoring a whopping 28 first-quarter points to take total control.

“We controlled the momentum for all but one play in the first half,” said American Fork coach Aaron Behm.

Abbott was on fire and threw four touchdown passes in the first half, including three to Chase Roberts.

The first connection to Roberts covered 77 yards and was one play after a Pleasant Grove touchdown.

Pleasant Grove couldn’t move the ball on its next possession and Jensen was injured on a scramble play which derailed the Viking offense the rest of the night.

Roberts then scored on American Fork’s next possession hauling in a 33-yard pass from Abbott. Kyle Thompson connected on this third straight PAT to put American Fork ahead 21-7.

The Cavemen weren’t done with their first quarter blitz as Abbott and Devin Downing hooked up on a 8-yard score.

Pleasant Grove couldn’t muster much offense and was forced to punt again. The Cavemen then took a more methodical approach running off nearly seven minutes of clock and marching down to the 2 yard-line. Pleasant Grove’s defense stiffened and after a delay of game penalty Thompson nailed a 25-yard field goal to put the home team out in front 31-7.

Pleasant Grove’s offense was forced to punt again and after a 20-yard return by Downing, Abbott led to team to one last score with 23.3 seconds left in the half. Abbott was true on a 10-yard pass to Roberts on a fourth-down conversion and American Fork went into the locker room with a commanding 38-7 lead.

Both teams scored in the third quarter as Pleasant Grove back-up quarterback Caleb Campbell found Rex Connors on a 60-yard score. American Fork responded with Abbot’s fifth touchdown pass, this one just from one yard out to Bodie Schoonover.

In the final stanza, Pleasant Grove’s Dane Christiansen broke off a 45-yard run while Thompson split the uprights from 27-yards away to give American Fork the last laugh.

Both teams face gargantuan matchups next week as American Fork (7-1 overall, 3-0 Region 4) visits the defending league and state champion Bingham Miners (7-1, 2-1) while Pleasant Grove (4-3, 1-2) will travel to Lone Peak (4-3, 2-1).

In regards to next week’s game against Bingham, Behm is excited for his team to have this challenge.

“It is something we wanted,” said Behm. “We knew the schedule was put out there that Bingham was the last region game, and you just hope you put in the work that makes that a significant game and here we are.”

A win by the Cavemen will lock up the Region 4 title while Lone Peak will hope to defeat Pleasant Grove and have Bingham win to possibly throw the league into a three-way tie for first place. A win by the Vikings would give them the third seed while dropping Lone Peak to the fourth seed. If Lone Peak wins and American Fork wins, the Knights would finish in second place in the league while dropping Pleasant Grove to the fourth seed.
